THE AQUAE QUERQUENNAE VIA NOVA FOUNDATION

On December 2, 1999, the Aquae Querquennae-Via Nova Foundation was established by notarial deed. On June 2, 2000, it was declared of cultural interest and was registered in the Registry of Foundations of Galician Interest by Order of July 3, 2000.

The foundation’s purpose is to protect, study, and promote the archaeological complex, as well as the sections of the Via Nova directly linked to it. To this end, the following priority activities are set:

  • The study of the Romanization of Galicia and, in particular, the Aquis Querquennis site through systematic archaeological excavations.
  • The organization of conferences, symposia, courses, workshops, and more.
  • The creation and management of an interpretation center with permanent, temporary, or traveling exhibitions that promote the site as a tourist center that boosts the local economy.

The foundation is currently made up of the Department of Culture of the Xunta de Galicia, the Deputation of Ourense, the Council of Bande, the Miño-Sil Hydrographic Confederation, the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Larouco Archaeological Group.

WE SPREAD OUR HISTORY

22 years of the Aquae Querquennae Via Nova Interpretation Center and the Quarquernia Museum

Located next to the site itself, it serves as a reception and information point for thousands of visitors who discover the site each year. It has two floors: the lower floor is dedicated to Roman roads, specifically the Via Nova itself. The upper floor is dedicated to the history of the region from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
