Aquis Querquennis 50th anniversary exposition: Sinistra Main Door

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CAMPAIGNS I

The first 25 years: from the discovery of Aquis Querquennis to the start of excavations

The monumentality and importance of this historic site would come to light in 1975 through Antonio Rodríguez Colmenero, who at that time was still in his early days as a brilliant researcher. Today, he is a professor emeritus at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of History.

The first archaeological interventions using scientific methodology, focused on the wall and the access gates, soon gave way to other excavations both inside and outside the military compound. Outside, the mansion that served the Via Nova would appear. Inside, several large structures would be discovered, such as the troop barracks, the grain store, and the hospital.

Already in the 20th century, work began on restoring the discovered remains to facilitate interpretation of the site for the thousands of visitors who have come to Aquis Querquennis each year ever since.

Performances in the 21st Century: The Present and Future of Aquis Querquennis

Antonio Rodríguez Colmenero was succeeded by Covadonga Carreño and Francisco M. Herves. After decades of archaeological excavations, especially since 2000 under the direction of Santiago Ferrer Sierra, the four access gates, five troop barracks, the headquarters, the hospital, the grain store, the latrine, and the praetorium (the residence of the highest command within the military camp) are now visible within the camp.

The application of geomagnetic prospecting and GPR technologies has now made it possible to decipher other structures still awaiting unearthed: five more troop barracks and a unique building of unknown function that is currently the focus of research.
